Most hype cycles are betting on something that doesn't exist yet. Quantum mechanics has been experimentally confirmed since the 1920s; what's new is hardware finally catching up to math that was never in question. In March 2026, Cleveland Clinic and IBM ran the first protein-scale quantum chemistry simulation on a real 303-atom molecule. That was a completed experiment, not a roadmap slide.
Parts of it are, honestly. Fault-tolerant quantum computers capable of breaking modern encryption are still years out — IBM's own target is 2029, and most experts treat that as ambitious.
